This past weekend Doug and I traveled to the San Juan Islands for the first time! My sweet parents watched baby girl for a night, so Doug and I could recharge our batteries. Although, it was so difficult to leave bebe for the first time ever overnight, it was so important to have time with my hubby.
How we got there: We took a private ferry line, that is known for whale watching. Sadly, I didn’t see any orcas, so next time we’ll probably take the Washington State Ferry (from Anacortes) into Friday Harbor to enjoy the actual island longer. The ride out to Friday Harbor was stunning. Once we got there, we had lunch at a restaurant, and I wasn’t too impressed. So I won’t recommend it on here. We decided to leave our car at home for this trip, so we took the Friday Harbor Jolly Trolly from Friday Harbor to Roche Harbor. You can also sea plane right into Roche. I might have to convince Doug to travel by plane next time. 😉
Where we stayed: We stayed at Roche Harbor Resort. WHAT a treat that was. This historic hotel had so much charm. Whether you are traveling with your spouse, or the whole family this hotel has tons of options (hotel rooms & condos). I can’t wait to return here one day. President Teddy Roosevelt stayed at the resort in 1906! I love this hotel, because it feels secluded, and everything you need is offered at the resort.
What we did: Friday- After we freshened up at the hotel, we took a trip out to Lime Kiln lighthouse. What a dream that was! If you have seen my Instagram, you know I’m obsessed with lighthouses. The walk out to the lighthouse is super easy, and there are additional trails around the lighthouse that are more challenging if you are in the mood for that.
Then, we checked out the grocery store across from the resort to pick up some snacks and drinks while we got freshened up for dinner. Before dinner we hung out on the balcony of the resort and took in all the BEAUTIFUL marina views.
At the resort, there are two dining options for dinner McMillin’s and Madrona. If we were there for two nights, we probably would of tried both. But, we ended up dining at Madrona. I am so glad we did. We had to best service, and it was a very casual experience right on the water, overlooking the marina. The resort also has a colors ceremony (retire of the flags for the day) right before sunset! We timed it right, and got to experience colors as we were sitting at dinner.
Saturday- We ate a Lime Kiln cafe (also located at resort). I highly recommend the donuts. YUM. After we grabbed coffee, we took a walk to San Juan Islands Sculpture Park. With over 120 unique sculptures it was neat to check out, and very easy to walk to from the resort.
We rode on the Jolly Trolly back to Friday Harbor, and ate breakfast at a restaurant. Also, wasn’t too impressed so I won’t recommend that restaurant either. We walked around Front Street of Friday Harbor for a bit. I got an AMAZING latte at Salty Fox Coffee. I highly recommend. The Friday Harbor Marina is also stunning!
Our ferry back was late, so we ended up at San Juan Island Brewery. This place was great. Doug and I both had a beer flight. My favorite brew was the seasonal peach cider, Doug’s was the IPA. We cannot wait to return to this brewery. They also had a food menu. I had mini hot dogs paired with my peach cider. Very classy, I know. 😉
Lastly, we stopped by the Cheesecake Cafe & Bakery on Spring Street to enjoy a piece of cheesecake on the ferry ride back home. The next day, you bet I worked out twice from all the treats.
I fell in love with the San Juan Islands. We ran out of time, but I would of loved to kayak around Roche. The Roche Harbor Resort had kayak rentals located at the marina. Also, I would love to island hop to Orcas Island and hike Mount Constitution. If you have any recs for next time, that I skipped please comment!
How handsome is my hubby?
